After claiming the fort, don't forget to run around and push away any siege ladders. Fort owners can knock down the ladder if they find it. You can now climb up on it and into the fort. If you have the 5 Wood Planks, you just have to hold down your left mouse button, and the ladder will be built.
Approach it, and a small GUI will pop up, telling you that you need 5 Wood Planks to build the ladder. Do this by approaching the wall of the fort with the Building Tool. You can also build a siege ladder to get into the fort. It is possible to delay the repairing of the gates by shooting the feet of the repairer underneath the gate (has inconsistent effectiveness), you can buy time for yourself by throwing some Smoke Bombs so they can't see you. Make sure you complete this process quickly, or the enemy will either kill you or fix the gates. After the first explosion, the fort's gates will change appearance into a damaged gate. Just throw them at the wall and wait for them to blow up. You can blow up the fort gates with 3 Dynamite or Explosive Arrows. There are two ways of getting into a fort. The Ruined Fort is similar in appearance to Henry and Spencer, but appears to have been lost and abandoned in battle. Mining coal can reduce the timer by 10 seconds each time a coal ore is fully mined and rewards you with $2. Players with a >$750 bounty and/or the Menace status are sent to Ashburn with a 300 second sentence when caught. Ashburn, however, is a prison as a whole, and can't be owned by a faction or an individual.
Spencer and Henry house unique features like Gatling Guns, prisons and a shop selling unique items found nowhere else. There are currently four Forts on the map: Fort Spencer, which is north of Bear Paw Valley, Fort Henry, which is east of Windmill Camp, and the Ruined Fort, found in Silver Hills, as well as the Ashburn Prison Camp, located just south west of Tribal Forest.
